Beta carotene is a red-orange pigment which like all carotenoids, is an antioxidant. In human body, a certain portion of beta carotene converts into vitamin A (retinol). We need vitamin A for healthy skin, tissue growth and repair, mucous membranes and good vision and eye health. The portion of beta carotene that isn’t converted to vitamin A functions as an antioxidant, a compound that helps to protect cells against oxidative damage (free radicals). Carrots, pumpkin, papayas, mangoes and apricots are some of the best sources of natural beta carotene.
Because beta carotene is so beneficial to the skin many skin care products manufacturer use it in their products and cosmetics including skin cleansers, facial moisturizers, foundation, sun products, bath products, hair care products and anti-aging products. In anti-aging products, beta carotene provides protection against sun damage and helps to even out skin tone and improve skin texture.
Another study shows that topical use of beta carotene can improve the appearance of skin by lightening areas of increased skin pigmentation. It is also said to be an effective treatment for melasma (blotchy areas of increased brown or dark-brown pigmentation). Melasma is most common on areas of skin that receive the most sun exposure, usually the cheeks, forehead, nose and chin and is more common in women.
Because of beta carotene’s distinct orange color, it’s used in some cosmetic and skin products as a coloring agent. In sun tanning products, the orange pigment gives a sun-kissed glow to the skin without tanning. It has the added benefit of offering additional sun protection when combined with other sunscreen ingredients.
Because of beta carotene’s free radical fighting capabilities, beta carotene zaps aging by acting as an antioxidant. Beta carotene is the hot new ingredient in anti-aging skin care products. This ingredient provides a plethora of anti-aging power for your skin. It can also be used topically on skin in anti wrinkle creams. Beta carotene skin care products not only use antioxidant power to reverse the signs of aging, but they also prevent future signs of aging as well.
Beta carotene is said to be a super substance against acne. It heals acne scars and quickens cell renewal to prevent pores from getting clogged. Since it quickens cell renewal it is wonderful for fading age spots. It brightens the skin and gives it clear glow.
The FDA and Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep Cosmetics Database classifies beta carotene as “generally recognized as safe” and a “low hazard cosmetic ingredient” respectively. According to them quantities found in skin care products and cosmetics are safe for topical use of beta carotene.
My recommendations for Beta Carotene based product is Carotene Oil Based Antioxidant Serum which deems fit for its respective effects of preventing skin troubles of ageing, fine lines, deep wrinkles, age spots, dull skin, flabby and sagged skin, acne and pimples & blemish.
