Our bodies are made so that they create millions of new cells every day of our lives. It is highly important that our glands and organs manufacture sufficient amounts of hormones and enzymes to regulate our metabolism and keep our bodies fit and healthy.
Methylsulfonylmethane, or MSM, is a form of organic compound sulfur found in dairy products, fruit, grains, meats and vegetables. In our opinion, MSM is a highly useful addition to a person’s diet. Nutritional sulfur is essential to our physical well-being as it helps us to build and maintain healthy flexible bodies.
MSM is said to cure arthritis, snoring and most allergies, rid us of wrinkles and make our hair grow. There are some skin creams that are based on MSM. The supposed health benefits of methylsulfonylmethane were first popularized by the book The Miracle of MSM – The Natural Solutions for Pain by Dr. Stanley W. Jacob and by Robert M Herschler, a research biochemist who holds eleven patents for MSM.
MSM is said to treat acne conditions. It is used in some acne treatment products including acne facial washes, ointments and acne creams. It’s an effective treatment for acne that has been around for many years. It has anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties and is a keratolytic that promotes shedding of the outer layer of dead skin cells. This helps to open up clogged pores and re-generate new skin tissue, thereby improving the signs and symptoms of acne.
MSM is used as moisturizing agent in many skin care products. It is said to have softening, deeply penetrating effect on the skin when applied topically. It has the unique ability to penetrate several skin layers and therefore provides a better, more deeply hydrating and smoothing effect for longer periods of time. It is one of the best ingredients to look for if you have dry or mature skin that has lost a lot of its elasticity.
MSM makes the skin cells more absorbent, it may very well have to do with the synergy of other lightening ingredients contained in a cream or lotion, so it may also allow natural skin brighteners to better penetrate the skin.
MSM has been said to help reduce hyper pigmentation issues such as melasma, pink or faded-red acne scars, age spots, freckles and sun damage. When applied topically, it has a brightening and aluminizing effect on the skin.
MSM appears to be safe in the quantities allowed in cosmetic and personal care products. The Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep Cosmetics Database classifies it as a low-hazard cosmetic ingredient.
